Canal Map — Privacy Policy
Last updated: 23 July 2026
Canal Map does not collect any data about you. There are no accounts, no adverts, no analytics and no tracking. Your location never leaves your phone.
This policy covers the Canal Map Android app (package uk.canalmap.canal_map), a free, non-commercial project by an independent developer. It explains what the app does and does not do with information.
Data we collect
None. Canal Map does not collect, store or transmit personal data. Specifically, it does not collect your name, email address, contacts, photos, files, device identifiers, advertising identifiers or usage data.
There is no user account and nothing to sign in to. There is no server operated by us that receives data from the app.
Data we share
None. Because no data is collected, no data is shared with, or sold to, any third party.
Location
Canal Map can show your position on the map and offer a distance-sorted "near me" list. To do that it asks for location permission.
- The permission is optional. The app is fully usable without it, and it is only requested when you tap the location button.
- Location is used only on your device, while the app is in the foreground. There is no background location access.
- Your location is never stored off the device, logged, or transmitted anywhere — including to us.
- You can withdraw the permission at any time in Android Settings → Apps → Canal Map → Permissions.
Internet access
The map itself is stored inside the app and works with no signal. The only network activity is a once-daily download of a small public file containing the Canal & River Trust's navigation notices (stoppages and closures).
This is a plain request for a static file. No personal data, location or device identifier is sent with it. If you are offline, the app uses the last copy it saved.
Third-party services
Canal Map contains no advertising networks, no analytics SDKs and no crash-reporting SDKs.
The stoppages file is served from static hosting. As with any request over the internet, the host may record standard technical server logs such as an IP address; this is outside our control and is not used by us for any purpose.
Children
Canal Map is a general-audience mapping app and is not directed at children. It collects no data from anyone, including children.
Permissions used
- Location (optional, foreground only) — to show your position and power "near me".
- Internet — to fetch the daily stoppages file.
Your rights
Data protection law gives you rights to access, correct and delete personal data held about you. As Canal Map holds no personal data about you, there is nothing for us to provide or delete. Any data held on your device is removed when you uninstall the app.
Data sources and attribution
- OpenStreetMap contributors — waterway geometry and many facilities, under the Open Database License (ODbL).
- Canal & River Trust Open Data — facilities and the navigation notices feed.
- Environment Agency Open Data, under the Open Government Licence — river navigation facilities where used.
Canal Map is not affiliated with, endorsed by, or an official app of the Canal & River Trust, the Environment Agency or OpenStreetMap.
